Intro to E-Textiles or Weaving with Light

with Geri Forkner

Description: Light up your fabric and enter the brave new world of E-textiles or fabrics with embedded electronics. It doesn't matter if you've never woven or created a circuit before, you'll learn to do both in this fun class. You'll start by setting up (warping) an inkle loom and learning to weave a narrow band of fabric on the loom. Then you'll embellish your weaving by adding LED lights and creating a simple circuit to power those lights. You'll leave with a unique textile that literally glows, new skills, and a better appreciation for smart fabrics. Lights are just the beginning!

Geri Forkner is a multi-media fiber artist based in East Tennessee who enjoys using fiber processes in unique ways to express ideas about life. She learned traditional fiber processes from her grandmother but became the only female in her engineering class when her father insisted “craft” was not a suitable career. Geri’s work has now come full circle and she is utilizing both her craft and technical skills in the exciting world of electronic textiles. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and is a nationally known artist and teacher working with both children and adults. Her creativity is contagious and her students are always inspired to think outside the box.
