Tsujigahjana: A Marriage of Shibori and Hand Painting

with John Marshall

Photos from left: John Marshall natural dyes on silk using a wide range of colors with a traditional look; indigo tsujigahjana detail; in process with shibori threads pulled tight to cinch the fabric around each design element.

Description: Tsujigahana (also commonly referred to as yuuzen) is one of the most fluid and expressive forms of Japanese paste-resist dyeing: It is a free-style method where resist is squeezed from a paper tube to block out areas of color, evoking mood and feeling through the movement of line, while color is applied around and over the resist to bring life and flowing contrast to the design. Learn the basics of this inspiring marriage of shibori and hand-painting while working with natural dyes on silk, cotton, and bast fabrics. Start with the traditional patterns John has prepared and then, as time allows, develop your own designs. You'll love the results - the soft and moody blends of colors you create with a range of stitch-resist techniques plus the crisp lines and delicate shadings you create with hand-painted pigments!

John Marshall has spent the past 45years immersed in his love of Japanese textiles. He began his career in Japan, studying with renowned instructors, including Kunio Ekiguchi (Japanese wrapping techniques) and Matsuyo Hayashi (bingata) before becoming Matsuyo Hayashi's understudy and absorbing her knowledge of dyeing. Since returning to the States, John has taught untold numbers of classes, published and blogged about his work, and exhibited through galleries, boutiques, and private showings to share his knowledge and passion with others. His work also been widely published and exhibitited abroad through sponsors including the US State Department and Kodansha.
